This abstract painting was inspired by a trip to Mesa Verde in southwest Colorado. The Pueblo people made this area their home for about 700 years; from about AD 600 - 1300. They built masonry structures beneath the protection of large cliff overhangs that were often several stories high. They farmed, hunted and also traded to support a settlement that peaked at 22,000 people. On a large wall protected from the weather there are hundreds of images drawn and carved into the rock representing all aspects of their life. I was intrigued by a calendar depicting all stages of the moon. The tribe migrated away from the area in the late 12th century due to climate change, leaving behind the art and architecture that helps describe the spirit of their civilization; and you can almost feel it.
