This abstract painting was inspired by the fact that I have a son who is a mining engineer. He would explain to me how different machinery works; horizontal drillers for example. I found myself imagining what it would look like inside that rock, to see so much material just flying away.
When I begin a painting I usually have an idea of where I am going with it and I will often make a small compositional sketch. I begin painting a canvas to establish the general color field. As that dries I apply texture through build up of papers and acrylic mediums, using a palette knife. After I determing that the major part of paint application is finished I add collage materials including cut and torn papers, cardboard, glass beads, foil, metal, Styrofoam, screening, etc.
