This painting was a commission for a family with roots in Barcelona, Spain. As the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, this major Mediterranean port city holds sway as the as the soul, political and artistic conscience of the of the region. The idea was to depict an abstraction of a medieval to 19th century time frame in this geographic area in order to remind a man of the wonderful, idealistic mindset of his boyhood. It is a region porously bordered on the north by France and the Pyrenees mountains with foothills and farming plains to the west. It was the home of artistic geniuses such as Picasso, Miro, Cervantes and Antonio Gaudi. Tiny villages dot the mountains where separatists could take refuge. Vestiges of Roman ruins abound and Don Quixote takes charge.
