This abstracted seascape was inspired by James Michener's novel Hawaii. In the beginning of the story Michener describes prehistoric islanders travelling the seas from one island to another - without the benefit of a map. Early civilizations developed many ways to knowledgeably navigate but there were still many unknowns and the journey could be dramatic. This applies to each of our lives today, when you think about it.
