Bird to Lake of the Ozarks
20 x 20 inches
acrylic and mixed media on gallery wrap canvas
sold
Many people from Missouri visit Lake of the Ozarks each summer. Most of the homes sit close to the shoreline as the landmass around the lake generally rises up fairly steeply from the water's edge and is densely covered with trees. An unusual shape for a lake because it is long and serpentine, this reservoir in fact, was formed in 1931 with the construction of the Bagnell Dam. This painting is an abstracted landscape inspired by the kind of satellite imagery seen on the Google Earth and NASA websites.
The map imagery here is fairly accurate. I was interested in developing an interpretation of this popular resort area using mixed collage materials. All of the boats and piers are individually cut from white paper, picked up with a tweezer, dipped in adhesive and placed on the painting. Houses, condos, and hotels are cut from colored papers. Materials for commercial buildings, roads and the airport are more varied.
