About the Artist

Having grown up in New Vernon, New Jersey, I spent my college years 40 miles away at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. There I lived for 5 years, studying interior design and architecture. The most formative year however, was the first; the year of Foundation Art which every student in the art school was required to take, regardless of the stated major. It was during that year that the love of painting and color and the creation of art Janice Schoultz Muddimbedded itself into my soul. During the years I spent working in the architectural and design field, I honed my design skills, I learned how to transform ideas into reality, I grew deeper as a person, and I longed to paint. When my family and I moved to St. Louis, MO in 1998, I decided to keep my drafting pencil packed in the box and I dusted off my brushes instead.

Oddly enough, my painting had improved over the years, even though I had not been painting. My eye was more acute and my creative skills more developed. Over the years I had read much, questioned much, experienced much and matured. This is what I call the depth I am now able to bring to my artwork and it is very satisfying.

The imaginative, creative and inquisitive sides of me request adventurous visual experimentation in the probing of the subject matter at hand. “I wonder what will happen if…”, is the thread that runs through my brain each time I encounter new problems and possibilities before me. I wonder with acrylic paint and oil pastel together; with watercolor, colored pencil and cut paper shapes combined, or all of these and papers enhanced through experimentation. Let me not forget the objects and materials not associated with art at all. At times, a single medium alone is the choice and technique the variant of the expression; always my mother tongue is color. I develop my paintings and collages with layers and layers of color, watching them become luminous and vibrant. It is so much fun.
